February is the month we traditionally do our AHA BLS CPR Renewal training. This year will be no different. However, the manner in which we do it, will be slightly different, since I have no other instructors to assist and the AHA allows a maximum of 8 students per instructor per class.
The AHA updates its guidelines every 5 years. This happened in 2015 as a result the AHA BLS CPR course was revised in 2016. For one renewal cycle (2 years), no renewals by challenge are allowed and everyone must take the full course (i.e., watch the DVD program).
The EMS Council of NJ, which the squad is a member of and whose training guidelines we are required to follow require that ALL active members have a current professional level CPR card (such as the AHA BLS CPR card). The Council also recommends CPR training on an annual basis for all active members.
To that end, the drill this Wednesday will start at 1900 (7 pm) at the New Road Building. We will show the new AHA DVD video (the pre-hospital provider version), but will not pause to practice the skills, since they should not be new to you. Those that want to renew their CPR card will then take the written test. Those not seeking to renew their cards at this time, need not take the written exam. This drill will last about 3 hours.
Those seeking to renew their cards will also sign up for a class where they will have a chance to practice, as needed, and then be tested on Adult/Child CPR with AED and infant CPR. Those who need to retake the written test will also do so at this class. This class will last less than an hour and I will schedule them to meet the needs of all members seeking to renew their cards.
As always, if you cannot attend the drill this Wednesday, please contact Brian or myself (in writing or via email) to be excused. Any questions about the drill should be directed to me.
Thanks.
