To all,
The Dodo is an extinct flightless bird that was endemic to the island of
Mauritius, east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. Volunteer First Aid
Squads are heading in the direction of the Dodo.
Please take the following Dodo test.
Have you ever said.
1. "There is a paid crew, them take it"?
2. "We have enough on the crew running, I don't need coverage".
3. "That's not our area, we are not going"?
4. "Let the call go to Tri-Squad and see if someone else will take it"?
5. "I will finish my charts when I get around to it".
If you answered yes to at least one question, think about this.
The public and Governments that support us are expecting a professional
organization to provide Emergency Medical Services in their communities. If
we as an organization cannot provide these services, we will become extinct.
The 3 squads in South Brunswick have been relying more and more on the SB3
paid crews to provide EMS services. If we continue on our current path,
Volunteer EMS in South Brunswick and Southern Franklin will go by way of the
Dodo.
What can we do.
1. If you are scheduled to run on a crew, Own it. Be responsible to
have proper coverage if you cannot run. A general email stating you will
not be running is not getting coverage. Make phone calls, switch shifts,
etc. Let your crew chief know your status. Don't assume the crew will be ok
without you.
2. Do rig checks. Don't Assume the rig is stocked appropriately for
your next call.
3. Restock after a call. Don't leave the rig a mess and for the next
crew to deal with.
4. Be professional and look professional. We are working on a uniform
change. In the short term, don't wear ripped and dirty cloths, sandals, or
anything not appropriate for a medical environment. What you wear needs to
Identify you as a squad member, (and are proud to be part of).
5. Complete your calls, this includes finishing your charts in a timely
manner.
6. Take care of your equipment and buildings. If they are a mess and
dirty, then they get treated as no one cares by everyone.
7. Mentor and train new members. They will be the future of the squad
if there will still be one.
8. Every member should be a recruiter for the squad.
If we all try to do just the 8 steps above, the squad will continue to
operate as a professional emergency medical service for the communities we
serve, and be around for many years to come. If not, Robert Wood and other
paid services will be replacing us.
