Hello All,

If we receive any reports of confirmed or presumptive cases of coronavirus
dispatch will flag the address of the patient as “Public Health.” If an
emergency personnel response is required at that address dispatch will
notify responding personnel (police, fire, EMS) via radio that there is a
flag for “Public Health.” Responding personnel should use universal
precautions as directed by their Standard Operating Procedures. Keep in
mind that in accordance with HIPPA Laws an individuals health information
is not to be shared or released beyond patient care.

Hello All,

I wanted to clarify the notification procedures for any potential COVID-19
exposures.

Following our Township OEM meeting from March 2nd, and from a Middlesex
County OEM meeting yesterday, the following procedure has been established:

·         Notification to a township regarding potential COVID-19
exposure *will
be made by the attending health care facility, Middlesex County Health
Department, or County OEM directly to South Brunswick OEM* via our
non-emergency phone number (732)329-4646. This number is staffed 24/7 and
will allow the information flow to occur quickly and accurately, while
still preserving the patient’s rights under HIPAA law.

·         Verified, factual information will then be shared with those
individuals who were potentially exposed, so that they can be properly
screened, and the appropriate next steps taken.

Following this procedure will assure proper, rapid, and factual
notification to relevant individuals with minimal spread of confusing,
inaccurate, and potentially alarming information, and no improper sharing
of patient information to unaffected individuals.

If you have any questions about this procedure, or have a need for
follow-up information on a call you may have questions about, please email
me directly with the particulars. Do not contact the SBPD duty officer
regarding these questions.

Thank you for understanding the need to properly handle patient health
information, while also balancing the need for appropriate notification to
Township OEM regarding public safety matters.

As information regarding COVID-19 is rapidly changing, I will reach out to
you should any of these procedures change.
