February is the month in which our squad does CPR refresher classes in lieu of our monthly drill. This year we have been hit by a double whammy making this more difficult: the Covid 19 pandemic and the American Heart Association has released its 2020 guidelines (every 5 years the AHA updates its guidelines). The pandemic makes it harder to safely run live drills (the last live drill was over a year ago). The updating of guidelines requires that every student take the full course instead of the abbreviated refresher course. As a result of this double whammy, I have decided the safest way to "refresh" those with a current card; provide training to those whose cards are expired; and train new members is to have those who need the training is to have them complete the 2020 AHA BLS CPR Heartcode Course which is an online course. Once the online portion of the course is completed you can print out a certification of completion. After that you must take a shorter in-person course. It takes about 30 minutes for experienced providers and about 3 hours and 30 minutes for new or inexperienced providers to take the in-person part of the course. The online part of the course is self-paced and can be split into several sessions.
The online course has been updated to the 2020 guidelines and is now available. I have also personally purchased a copy of the instructor material, which includes both the full in-person course and the material to teach the in-person part of the Heartcode course and am still waiting for it to arrive. (The refresher material is usually not released until 2 years after the update is issued.)
I have reviewed the list of our active members and those whose cards have expired or expire before the end of March 2021 are listed below. If you are on the list and have a current CPR card that expires after March 31, please send me a copy of your card and I will update your records.

If you need to take the course because you CPR card is expiring or has expired, and you would like to take the AHA BLS Heartcode course, let me know and I will send you a keycode for the 2020 course. If your card is not expiring prior to March 31, 2021, but you would like to take the course let me know and I will send you a keycode as well. When you finish the online course, let me know and I will schedule you for the in-person part of the course in groups of 4.
All active members are required to have a current BLS CPR card.
We are paying $31 dollars per keycode, so please complete the course. I do have two keycodes left over for the 2015 guidelines, if you prefer them, but the online and in-person parts of the course must be completed by June 31, 2021, and you will need to take the full 2020 guidelines course when you renew.
If there is any current CPR Instructor that would like (or needs to) teach a full CPR course let me know and I will arrange to have enough copies of loaner 2020 student manuals on-hand to let you teach the full course. If you would like to help teach the in-person part of the Heartcode course, let me know, the help would be appreciated.
Thanks for reading the full email.
